There is no present or future without the past.
The past of the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic
is both exciting and varied. In more than 100
years since its foundation in 1895, the clinic
has had to withstand political changes as well
as two world wars and the associated economic
upheavals.
Today the changes in the healthcare system represent
a major challenge, with the clinic having to
provide patient-centred, modern medicine against
a background of ever scarcer resources. On the
one hand, the use of state of the art medical
technology has to be combined with personal
attention and service. On the other hand, there
is an obligation to be honest to patients about
the limits of what modern medicine can do. These
basic principles are the direct result of the
special history of the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye
Clinic.
