Patient care
Herzog Carl Theodor developed a treatment concept
which is still used in the eye clinic today.
All of the diagnostic facilities, operation
theatres and patient wards correspond to the
state of the art in medicine. Technical innovations
are made accessible to all patients equally,
regardless of their insurance status. Pre-operation
treatment and follow-up are carried out by trained
nursing personnel under a doctor's supervision.
Outpatient operations
Patients of the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic
are generally referred to one of the ophthalmologists
at the clinic by their attending eye doctor.
On their first visit to the clinic they receive
a thorough examination of the eyes or of the
eye requiring surgery. This tells the operating
surgeon the treatment required and gives the
patient the assurance of a second opinion. Depending
on the results of the examinations, all of the
necessary preparations are made for the operation.
The type of anaesthetic is established and agreed
upon with the patient's GP as necessary.
Almost all eye operations are carried out under
local anaesthetic. Thanks to the anaesthetic
the operation is completely pain free. The patient
is lightly sedated but awake and alert throughout.
As each patient is different and it is not always
possible to predict the response to a local
anaesthetic, all operations are monitored by
an anaesthetist on standby. This ensures the
best possible safety of all interventions.
After surgery and before leaving the clinic,
the patients are taken care of in the relaxing
atmosphere of a monitoring unit redesigned in
autumn 2004. All of the doctors at the clinic
are concerned to provide precise and comprehensible
information to patients before surgery and to
provide exact instructions about what is to
be done after the operation. The referring eye
doctor usually provides the post-op follow-up
care for patients.
Inpatient care
If the operation requires inpatient treatment,
the patient is accompanied to the ward. Here
the function of the nurse alarm, telephone direct
dial and television are explained as well as
the daily routine of doctors' visits and mealtimes.
When the clinic was renovated the patient wards
were also newly fitted and now all are equipped
with en suite sanitary facilities.
Carers accompanying patients are very welcome
in the clinic. If necessary, they can even be
accommodated in the same room.
Herzog Carl Theodor and his wife also installed
a chapel in the clinic and donated a beautiful
neogothic altar. The chapel is open all day
to all believers. Masses are held regularly.
